Casino plans inch along

Rockaway Beach's desire for a riverboat casino shifted into second gear this week.

According to Alderman Dennis Howard, owner of Denny's Dog House, a signed petition from voters in Rockway asking for a Missouri Constitution amendment to allow a gambling casino in Rockaway was sent to the secretary of state. If that petition is approved, a statewide petition drive to get the measure on the November 2004 ballot can begin.

I have also heard that they are talking about building an Airport in Hollister. Has anyone heard anything about that?

All you have to do is look to see what gambling has done for the economy in places like Tunica, MS and Cripple Creek, CO, to see what a great boon this would be to the area.

It is statistically proven that people love CASINO GAMBLING and that having this here would funnel and enormous amount of money into the local economy.

Let's all hope it goes through.

I can't speak from experience about Tunica, Mississippi, but gambling has been a mixed blessing for Cripple Creek, Colorado. Casino building has taken over every inch of the old mining town, to the exclusion of any other business. It has put many local businesses relying on the tourist trade out. Businesses connected with the casinos have prospered. Cripple Creek went from a sleepy mining town to a mini-Vegas without any of the glitz and lights that makes Vegas an experience even if gambling is not at the top of your list. Last time I went to Cripple Creek, it was gambling or nothing.

I'd hate to see that happen to Branson, or any other place i enjoy visiting.

The fate of Casino gambling doesn't rest in the hands of voters in Rockway Beach, all they can do is to petition for a Missouri Constitution amendment to allow a gambling casino in Rockaway - the voters of Missouri will be the ones to vote whether or not to allow the change in the constitution. I don't expect this to be an easy win for casino gambling.
